You’ve got your poker team together. You’ve booked the Friday off work and you’re ready for one of you to make a deep run at the weekend.

You arrive fresh at the Ricoh Arena on the Friday morning after a great night’s sleep on the floor of the Air BnB you’re sharing. As you descend the escalator into the casino, you are greeted by a line almost the size of GOLIATH himself! You join the back of the queue, but word gets around quick that Day 1G is full – they’re not registering any more players…

DO NOT BE THAT PERSON!

The Goliath is an incredibly busy event. If you are planning on playing the Goliath – especially if you’re planning on playing Thursday’s Day 1F or Friday’s Day 1G – you must register as early as possible!

Luckily for you, it’s really easy to register for THE GOLIATH! You can just pop into any GROSVENOR CASINO, register for the DAY 1 of your choice and you’re set. Alternatively, you can login to your GROSVENOR POKER account (see the pic above) and register there! Super easy and it will save you a lot of time and energy!

***You can only register for ONE Day 1! If you are intending on playing more than one day, you will need to register for each day individually once you have bust the Day 1 you are playing –
You cannot be simultaneously registered for more than one Day 1***

The GOLIATH starts at 11am. You do not want to be the person queuing to get in the casino as you hear ‘shuffle up and deal.

Now besides the obvious, there are 2 great reasons to arrive early at The GOLIATH:

  1. Parking – The Ricoh Arena is blessed with ample parking and rarely have I ever had trouble finding a space. However, if you are late you will likely be parked in the overflow car park – one of which is across a bridge 10 minutes away. Not ideal if you’re already running late!
  2. Flip ‘n’ Go – At 10am each day, Grosvenor are running ‘Flip n Go’ games in their cash area. This gives you a great opportunity to ‘flip’ your way into an event for a fraction of the price! Click here for more info on the GOLIATH Flip ‘n’ Go games!

So for the love of the Ace of Spades please get there on time!

Ok, this one is a bit tongue in cheek..! But still important if this is your first ever GOLIATH!

For each Day 1 (and Day 2 & 3 if you are fortunate enough to still have chips), you will be given a wristband upon entry to the casino.

Obviously if you end up playing a number of Day 1’s, you’ll end up with a number of wristbands! So you may find that the number of Day 1’s you play directly correlates with the numbers of arm hairs you have by the end of the week!

I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s worth losing a few arm hairs for that £100,000 first place prize!

Take pictures? In a casino?! Not quite. But this is meant to be a festival, right?!

The GOLIATH (and all side events) are actually held in an adjoining part of the Ricoh Arena where you are more than welcome to get a few snaps!

Whether it’s a pic of your growing stack, the remains of a stack that once was, pics with a new friend (or foe!) you’ve made at the table or even a pic with the Big Man DAVID HAYE himself, the team at the GOLIATH encourage you to tweet your pics at them and they’ll display them on huge screens in the arena for all to see! So keep it relatively clean!

As well as the rolling Twitter feed and the Flip ‘n’ Go games, there are a number of exciting opportunities and promotions throughout the week to get involved with, such as:

Sean Heydon – A magnificient close-up magician who works tirelessy to entertain and enthral everyone that he meets.

Check out this video from last year!

Online Flip Satellites – Whilst you’re battling it out at the tables, the Goliath team will randomly announce that they’re holding an online flip, so grab your phone, log in and see if you can win a GOLIATH seat for next year!

Random Draws/Spin the wheel – Now I’ve never been lucky enough to get one of these, but in previous years the GOLIATH team has offered a number of ways to win a variety of tickets and prizes throughout the week. So keep your eyes peeled for them this year!

So there are my top 5 tips for how to get the most out of your GOLIATH 2019 and I, for one, cannot wait to spend the week in Coventry at the GOLIATH FESTIVAL!

Oh, and did I mention the poker’s pretty good too?!

The record breaking 2018 Goliath main event saw a whopping 7,584 players compete for an incredible £758,400 prizepool! But there could only be one winner. After three exciting days of poker-battle, the victor emerged to be Florian Duta – banking £101,450 for his troubles, not bad from a £125 buy-in!

We caught up with Florian to ask him a few questions about his experience at last year and for any advice he could give ahead of Goliath 2019.

You are no stranger to high buy-in events, ranging from £1k to $25k, what is it that attracts you towards playing the Goliath with its £125 buy-in?

I don’t mind playing any stakes as long as there is good value and it’s well organised. It helped a lot that it’s local, as I live in Birmingham.

Given Goliath has a relatively low buy-in of £100+25 for what can be a full week of poker, how does the event compare to some of the biggest tournaments you have played across the world in terms of structure, event management and value for the £25 registration fee?

I was really impressed with how good the structure is for this buy-in, and the venue is great, as well as the overall managing of the event. While I remember the room was packed and getting between tables was a bit difficult in some spots, it is to be expected when you’re hosting an event with over 7,000 players.

You have had some great results Florian and are clearly in great form, how does the Goliath rank in terms of your poker accomplishments?

It is one of my best wins, both as personal financial gain and for the moment in which it came.

You beat over 7,000 players to win the Goliath in 2018 (from just 1 bullet I believe), what advice would you give to players looking to replicate your success this year and beat that many players.

It was actually my 3rd bullet (it’s worth racking up the tickets in online satellites on Grosvenorpoker.com). Hard to give out an easy recipe, as luck will be the governing factor in such a large field. Choose your spots carefully, pounce when you feel weakness, and don’t be afraid to put your tournament life on the line.

Did you see any common mistakes over the course of the tournament?

You’d see mistakes of all sorts in such a wide field, but probably the general tendency is too loose at the start and too tight on the last day.

Can you remember winning a pot or making a play that made you believe you were in with a good shot of winning the whole tournament?

I remember bluff raising river successfully late in day 1, not the whole hand but 2 flushdraws and some straight draws missed and opponent led out after check calling twice. I found it very improbable that he would have just called turn with a big hand, on such a dynamic board, so I jammed and he folded after a lot of thought. That got me up to near chiplead stack, and I felt I have a good chance to do well in this.

How well do you think you ran to beat a field of that size?

I’ve been very lucky in either card distribution, or my opponents not having a big hand when I ran a big bluff. Also hit some flops at key times and opponents sort of gifted me chips with unnecessary bluffs. So, I have been lucky in many ways. There’s no way you win the tournament if you don’t run well, either by holding when ahead or winning big flips, or just not being dealt coolers and being able to chip up nice and slow.
