London has plenty of casinos, but it is quite rare to have a casino with an award-winning restaurant.

The Heliot Steak House is located in the Hippodrome Casino, just off Leicester Square, a buzzing and vibrant part of London.

Under the guidance of Executive Chef, Ioannis Grammenos, it was voted ‘best steak restaurant’ by Bookatable, one of Europe’s largest and most popular online booking service.

With 150 dining capacity, it is not bijou and intimate, but it certainly is plush and some say ‘sexy’. There is a wide menu choice and food is served 24 hours a day, so if you are an avid gambler who cannot take yourself away from the roulette wheel or the blackjack table, you can avail yourself of burgers, sliders and breakfast in the wee small hours of the morning. We loved the ambience of this restaurant, and it was great to go somewhere so different.

Whilst the food here has a leaning towards high-quality USDA prime steaks, these are served with panache and maturity. There are plenty of toppings and sauces to choose from (including lobster tail), just like a ‘surf and turf’ – everything is mouth-wateringly good.

The view is another great aspect of the Heliot. Situated on the mezzanine floor, you can watch the gamblers downstairs if you are lucky enough to bag a table by the balcony. Whilst it is fascinating to watch the gambling, do not forget the food as you would be missing out!

Whilst steak is a predominant feature on the menu, Ioannis and his team produce a range of exciting dishes, including delicious fresh tagliatelle with roasted mushrooms and laden with truffles, a range of delicate and glossy fish dishes and fabulous fresh desserts. If your tummy is groaning with hunger, try a side of the ‘millionaires mac ‘n cheese’ along with your steak. Crisp and chunky chips or skinny fries are also very tasty, and certainly not an afterthought by the kitchen team.

The menu is competitively priced, but it is really the quality we are talking about here. Meat dishes are succulent, and starters such as Endive and Grilled Avocado Salad with Roquefort and Caramelised Pecans will please those with an appetite for lighter food. Perfectly balanced and seriously fresh.

We went ‘fishy’ on our starters – grilled octopus (so tender), with sesame, shallots and crushed potatoes, and (never had this before) sea bass ceviche with pureed mango and tiger’s milk! Soft, unusual and epicurean delight.

We just had to have the steaks – be rude not to! We each had a different cut so that we see what they were like. Ribeye and the fillet certainly did not disappoint, juicy and succulent with the perfect sear on the outside.

After dinner, we slipped into the next door Heliot Bar for a final drink before heading home. With its unique setting and great food, we will return.
